What Actually Causes Implant Failure
The most common cause is peri-implantitis, an infection around the implant that behaves a lot like gum disease and can spread to the jawbone if it’s not caught. Failed osseointegration is another factor. That’s when the bone never properly fuses to the titanium post after implant surgery. Poor oral hygiene, uncontrolled diabetes, osteoporosis, teeth grinding, and physical trauma to the mouth can all raise the risk too. Smoking and certain medical conditions can slow healing and make failure more likely as well.
Symptoms of a Failed Dental Implant
Implant failure can show up within months of surgery or years down the line. Watch for swelling, redness or pus near the gumline, an implant post that feels loose or shifts, receding gums around the implant, difficulty chewing on that side, bad breath that brushing won’t fix, and new or unusual pain. Any of these is worth a call.

How Dental Implant Salvage Works
Treatment usually starts with a deep cleaning around the implant to clear the infection, and sometimes antibiotics are prescribed. If the jawbone has weakened, a bone graft can rebuild enough support to save the implant. We try to preserve the existing post if the surrounding bone and connective tissue are healthy enough to support it. If it can’t be saved, we’ll walk you through getting a new implant or discuss alternatives like dentures once your mouth has healed.
Common Questions
Who ends up paying for a failed implant?
It depends on your original agreement and whether the failure is covered under warranty. We’ll review your specific case and give you a straight answer before anything moves forward.
What does it cost to remove a failed implant?
Cost varies based on the implant’s position and whether bone grafting is also needed. We’ll give you a clear estimate at your consultation.
What are the biggest warning signs of implant trouble?
Swelling, looseness, new pain, and ongoing bad breath near the site. Catching any of these early can improve the chances of salvage treatment working.
What’s the difference between early and late implant failure?
Early failure can show up within the first few months and is often related to infection or incomplete osseointegration. Late failure tends to happen years later and is more often linked to peri-implantitis or gradual bone loss.
Can every failed implant be saved?
Not always, but many can. Some posts just need treatment and can stay in place, while others need to be removed before a new implant can be placed. Either way, we’ll explain whether salvage is possible and review your treatment options.
