General Dentistry FAQs
Why are regular dentist visits important?
Many people don’t visit a dentist until problems arise. This ends up costing more time and money than preventative care. Oftentimes, oral health issues present no symptoms until the disease is at an advanced stage. Regular visits allow your Katy dentist to detect and treat early or prevent dental conditions.
Why do I need to floss when I brush every day?
Daily flossing removes plaque and bacteria that your toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Diligent brushing is important, it gets rid of much mouth bacteria, but it doesn’t remove plaque between teeth and below the gum line. If you don’t remove plaque from hidden areas, it hardens into tartar that can only be removed by a dentist. Left untreated it can lead to gum disease.
How can I prevent decay and cavities?
- Brush your teeth at least twice daily for two to three-minute sessions. Use a soft-bristled brush and a gentle touch. What you are brushing away is soft and easily removed. Floss once a day to eliminate plaque, bacteria and leftover food particles between teeth.
- Limit sugar intake. This includes candy, soda, fruits, chips, and cookies. These are the treats that allow mouth bacteria to thrive. Also, eat sticky foods like peanut butter and raisins in moderation. Rinse your mouth with water after eating them and brush your teeth in about 30 minutes. If it is not possible to brush after eating, swish with water or chew sugarless gum to increase saliva flow and fight plaque naturally.
