What’s Actually Infected
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When a deep cavity or cracked tooth allows bacteria to reach the pulp, it can get infected and inflamed. The pressure inside the tooth can cause the sharp, throbbing pain people often associate with needing a root canal.
What Happens During Treatment
There are several steps in the root canal procedure. First, we numb the area with local anesthesia. We then remove the infected tissue from inside the tooth’s root canals. Once the area is cleaned and disinfected, the canals are filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. A crown is usually placed afterward to protect the tooth and strengthen it for everyday chewing. Most patients describe the experience as similar to getting a deep filling.
Signs You Might Need a Root Canal
- Sharp or throbbing tooth pain, especially when chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers afterward
- A tooth that looks noticeably darker than the teeth around it
- Swelling or a small bump on the gum near a specific tooth
- Pain that comes and goes but keeps returning
In some cases, there may be no obvious signs, and the problem can only be detected on X-rays. That’s another reason regular dental exams are important for your dental health.
Root Canal Treatment vs. Tooth Extraction
Saving your natural tooth with root canal treatment is almost always preferable to pulling it because your tooth helps support your bite and jawbone. We may recommend tooth extraction when a tooth is too damaged to save. If that happens, we’ll discuss dental implants or dentures as replacement options.
Common Questions
How does root canal treatment work?
We remove the infected tissue from inside the tooth, clean and disinfect the area, and fill and seal it with gutta-percha. A crown is usually placed on top to restore and strengthen the tooth.
Is root canal treatment as painful as people say?
No. Local anesthesia numbs the area during the root canal procedure, and the treatment usually relieves the dental pain caused by the infected tooth.
What symptoms may mean I need a root canal?
Ongoing tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling near a tooth, and a tooth that has darkened can all be signs that you need root canal therapy.
What happens if I leave an infected tooth untreated?
The infection can spread and may lead to an abscess or tooth loss. Treating it early can help save your tooth and keep the problem manageable.
How long does the crown usually last?
With good care, a crown can often last 10 to 15 years or longer before it needs to be replaced.
