Oral Conscious Sedation

As part of your treatment plan, you and your dental team may decide that light dental sedation with oral medication is the best approach. We’ll review your medical history and give you instructions for taking the prescribed sedative, usually about an hour before your appointment. By the time you’re in the chair, you’re relaxed, and the visit may seem to pass quickly. You stay awake during dental treatment, but most patients remember very little afterward. This option works well for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or sensitive teeth that make longer procedures harder to sit through.

IV Sedation

For more involved procedures, like surgical extractions or wisdom tooth removal, IV sedation works faster and provides a deeper level of sedation than an oral sedative. The medication goes directly into your bloodstream, putting you into a calm, trance-like state throughout the procedure. It requires a bit more planning, including arranging for someone to drive you home afterward, but it’s a good option when a procedure is going to take a while.

Is Sedation Right for You?

We review your medical history before making recommendations since certain health conditions and medications can affect which sedation type is safest. Oral conscious sedation tends to work well for dental anxiety, while IV sedation is generally used for longer procedures or higher anxiety levels. Either way, we walk new patients through exactly what to expect ahead of their appointment.

Common Questions

What sedation options do you offer?

We offer oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. The right option depends on what you’re having done and how relaxed you’d like to be.

How does oral sedation work exactly?

You take a pill according to the schedule we give you before your visit so it begins working as your appointment starts.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes. Our team is well trained and monitors you closely. It’s most often used for longer or more involved procedures, such as wisdom tooth removal or other oral surgery.

What’s the upside of using a sedation dentist?

It can help you get the care you’ve been putting off and allow us to catch small problems before they become bigger ones.

Will I remember much afterward?

With oral conscious sedation, most people remember very little of the visit, even though they’re awake the whole time.

If sedation sounds like it could help, we’re happy to talk through which option may fit best, especially if you need a tooth extraction or wisdom teeth removal. Call (281) 395-2100.
