What are Dental Implants?
On its own, a dental implant doesn’t look like a tooth, but rather a small titanium screw. This is because it’s placed within the jaw to serve as the foundation for the new teeth on top. The implant actually bonds with the bone like a real tooth would, which is the secret behind implants’ incredible strength. Even better is that these new roots can be used to support single teeth, multiple teeth, and even entire rows as needed.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option out there. Because they replace the roots of the missing teeth, they offer a variety of benefits that you can’t find with other tooth replacement options. This includes additional stability, comfort, and longevity. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a multi-step process, including a surgical procedure. Everyone’s treatment looks a little bit different, but here are the main steps everyone can expect.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
The first step when getting dental implants is attending an initial consultation. During this time, we will examine your smile to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Some patients need to undergo preliminary procedures, like gum disease treatment and bone grafting, before they are able to get implants. If any of these apply to you, we will help you get them scheduled. Once your gums and jaws are in good shape, we can move on to planning the rest of your dental implant treatment.
Dental Implant Surgery
At Villagio Family & Cosmetic Dental, we complete the entire dental implant process at our practice, so you don’t need to worry about working with an outside specialist at a different location. After numbing the area with a local anesthetic, an incision is made into the gum tissue so your dental implants can be precisely placed into the jawbone. Then, the gums are closed up and caps are placed over the ends of the implants to keep them safe throughout the healing process.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment
Over the next three to six months, the implant will become one with your jaw in a fusion process called “osseointegration.” Once this healing process is complete, we’ll attach an abutment to it, which will link the implant to your new teeth. Impressions are also taken of your mouth so your restorations can be customized at the dental lab.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations
Once your restoration is complete, you can return to our practice. We will secure it to your dental implant(s) via the abutments. If everything looks and feels great, you will be free to show off your complete smile to the world!
Benefits of Dental Implants
- Incredible Longevity—Dental implants often last for 25-30 years (regular dentures/bridges usually have to be replaced every five to seven years).
- Reliable Stability—Because implants are connected to your jaw, they won’t move when you speak or eat.
- Long-term Protection—Implants stimulate the jawbone from within and prevent it from shrinking, preserving your face shape and lowering your risk of future tooth loss.
- Lifelike Appearance—Featuring no metal attachments, only you and your dentist will be able to tell which teeth are implants and which are not.
Who Dental Implants Can Help
A person with any number of missing teeth has the potential to be a great candidate for dental implants in Cinco Ranch. All they need to bring to the table is a mouth that is healthy enough to undergo surgery. Even if this is an issue, we can help someone resolve conditions that are holding them back so they’re able to get the procedure.
Missing One Tooth
A single implant is placed and topped with a custom-made crown. Unlike other solutions, the nearby teeth won’t have to be reshaped or shaved down to accommodate the new one.
Missing Multiple Teeth
Just two implants can be used to hold a bridge in place that brings back up to four teeth in a row. A small number of implants can also be paired with a partial denture.
Missing All of Your Teeth
With just four to six implants, we can restore an entire row of teeth, giving someone a denture that is smaller, yet multiple times stronger and more secure than a traditional removable prosthetic.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants
It’s important to point out that dental implants do cost more than other tooth replacement options up front, but over time, they tend to help patients spend less on their teeth. How? It all comes down to their longevity. Most of the time, once a patient gets dental implants, that’s it, which can’t be said when it comes to dentures and bridges that have to be replaced every few years, incurring a new cost every single time.
Dental Implant FAQs
Are Dental Implants Safe?
Yes. Anchoring a titanium post to your jawbone might not sound like a good idea, but it actually very closely mimics the structure of natural teeth. Normally, pearly whites hold fast to your jawbone with their dental roots. Implant posts aren’t made of the same material, of course, but they are biocompatible, which is why your bone will be happy to integrate with them.
We’ll also make sure to thoroughly exam and review your oral health before treatment. Complications like gum disease won’t prevent you from ultimately receiving dental implants, but it is important to take care of these issues before placing your new teeth.
How Successful Are Dental Implants?
Extremely! In fact, they have a 95% success rate. Some research even tracks a 99% success rate. Don’t worry, though – your Cinco Ranch dentists won’t simply rest on their laurels. The success of dental implants can be credited to skilled placement and thorough preparation. We’ll do our part to ensure your treatment’s success, and consistent at-home oral hygiene will help ensure your implants last for as long as possible. Here’s what we recommend:
- Brushing your teeth twice daily
- Flossing at least once per day
- Rinsing your mouth after each meal
- Brushing your tongue
What Can Cause Dental Implants to Fail?
Dental implant failure is incredibly uncommon, but one thing that can do the deed is gum disease. It’s important to understand that while your dental implants will be more or less immune to cavities, they still rely on your gums for support. Gum disease, as the name implies, attacks your gums, causing them to recede and jeopardizing your implants and teeth.
They will fall out if the disease progresses for long enough, so call our office if you notice swollen or bleeding gums. Biannual visits can also help prevent serious cases of gum disease, as they give a chance to look for early warning signs. Perhaps the best preventative measure, though, is daily oral hygiene!
Am I Too Young to Get Dental Implants?
That depends – are you less than 18 years old? While patients can lose teeth at any age, and we recommend replacing them with a dental restoration as soon as possible, the human jawbone doesn’t fully develop until the early-to-mid 20’s. Like your gums, your jawbone is also an important dental support system, so individuals caught during mid-jawbone development are usually not good candidates for dental implants.
